 Chapter: Scholarships

Success does not come easy and Phi Psi can be a key to your future. Michael Bloomberg, mayor of New York, started on the road to success by applying himself in the classrooms of John Hopkins University and the Maryland Alpha Chapter of Phi Kappa Psi.

"Knowledge is power" and Phi Psi understands that your reason for being at college is to prepare for the challenges of life ahead. To support the pursuit of excellence in the classroom the chapter and national fraternity offer a variety of incentive programs and academic support services.

At the local level the alumni association provides assistance through a close involvement with the chapter. Regular membership reviews of academic progress are held. Scholarship as well as chapter involvement are factors in receiving one of several annual awards totaling $5,000.00 from our dedicated scholarship account. Our advisor, Dr. Brian Carr, serves as an adjunct instructor at the university as well as the counseling center and can direct undergraduate brothers to the services they need to be successful.

Costs

The total pledge fees are $600. The fee includes the cost of the solid gold Phi Psi badge and the IFC pledge fee. After being initiated into the fraternity the monthly member dues are $500 per semester. A monthly payment plan is available.

You could have some optional costs. We make T-shirts that are available for purchase for some events. Alcohol purchase is by individuals. You pay travel and incidental expenses on ski trips or to attend retreats in Los Cabos,  Mexico. (Generally Cabo room and board are provided at no cost.)

Brothers are expected to be active in meetings and social events for their four yeas of college.

Scholarships Available

As a member of Phi Kappa Psi at Texas Tech you can potentially receive $5,000 per year in scholarships. Scholarships are awarded both locally, via the Phi Kappa Psi South Plains Educational Foundation, Inc. (the chapter house corporation) and nationally, directly from The Endowment Fund of Phi Kappa Psi, the largest such fund of any fraternity.

Locally provided scholarships are currently awarded twice twice per year in the amount of $500 each to three applicants. Primary criteria are chapter contribution, grades, and need. These are awarded at the fall Homecoming banquet and the spring Founders Day banquet.

Under consideration is an additional scholarship of similar amount the be given to one initiate in good standing from each new pledge class based exclusively upon grades the semester prior to and during pledgeship, or for fall pledge classes, upon SAT / ACT score and grade average during pledgeship.

Nationally provided  scholarships are available from the Endowment Fund. You can make applications online at the Phi Kappa Psi national website, Often there are not many applicants for these scholarships, so the chances of getting one are good. Texas Tech Chapter members have received these in recent years.
