A
Commitment
to our Memories
Is Texas Beta an
experience of only a few years?
Can the fraternity shape a young man for success?
Can we live "beyond ourselves" in an eternal commitment to high
standards and fraternal bonds?
The answer to these
questions forms the energy behind our "100
Brothers/100 Bricks"
chapter house construction campaign. Spearheaded by Cliff Watt (TX Beta 64’)
and Dan Ruff (TX Beta 64’) the campaign is designed to leave a legacy
for Texas Beta.
This effort was successful in
completing the first phase of our campaign...the construction of
the new chapter house. We took possession in August of 2003 and
the facility is one of the best on the Greek Circle.
While we have the new house it is
critical that continued alumni support be provided. We are asking that
each brother consider what they can do to help with (1) retiring the
remaining $94,000 debt on the house and (2) provide for on-going
financial operations for the house.
We believe that 100
brothers can do the job by pledging $2,500 each. We hope that more will
respond to this call and that additional funds can be raised for expansion
of the house plans. We hope that all alumni brothers will give whatever
they can in this effort to honor their time at Tech and the chapter.
We will be asking that
contributing brothers consider the following options:
1. 100% of their money be
given to the "Texas Beta House Corporation". These funds allow
the House Corporation to target the specific, non-educational,
operations of the house as well as pay down on the remaining mortgage. . In this
instance there is no tax benefit
for the contribution but the chapter is not burdened with a loan
repayment.
2. If a tax benefit is
necessary then we ask that 40% of the contribution to given to the House
Corporation (no tax benefit),
and 60% given to the "Bill Collins Dedicated Account" within the
National Endowment Fund
(which also carries tax
deductions and the chapter can borrow from but must repay).
Checks should be forwarded
to Cliff Watt at

Let’s all pull
together and form an unbreakable chain of
100 Brothers/100 Bricks.
Bill Collins Scholarship
Fund: A dedicated Endowment Fund Account
All contributions to the Texas Beta Capital Campaign will be deposited into a
sub-account of the Endowment Fund named after Bill E. Collins Texas Beta
53' and prominent brother (deceased 1999).. From this account, the Campaign
Steering Committee will borrow funds to complete the planned Chapter House
construction. The Endowment Fund will make the loan at prevailing market rates, under conventional lending
terms. Additional construction funds will be made available by direct grants from the Capital
Campaign Account for purely educational portions of the renovation project.
Additionally, a copy of the Letter Agreement with the Endowment Fund, which specifies the
exact means by which the Capital Campaign Account will be utilized to fund the
construction project, will soon be available by contacting Brian D. Carr at
bha@wiredbrush.com (806-795-3911).
Most importantly, each and every donation to the Capital Campaign Account will
remain dedicated to the sole and exclusive use of the Texas Beta Chapter in
perpetuity. The entirety of the Capital Campaign Account will forever provide
scholarship money for undergraduate members of the Chapter - including during the
period the Campaign Steering Committee repays the loan - and can be utilized at a
future date for additional renovations of the Chapter House. Your one-time donation can
make a difference in the growth and perpetuity of Texas Beta!
There are multiple mechanisms available for alumni to contribute to the
Texas Beta Capital Campaign. Brief discussions of various programs appear below. Additional questions
may be directed to a member of the Campaign Steering Committee, or through your personal
accountant, attorney or financial advisor.
Funding Mechanisms
Direct Fund Deposits: Cash donations, checks, and credit card charges can be
forwarded directly to Campaign Coordinator Brian Carr at 5429-78th Street,
Lubbock, Texas 79423, for accounting purposes. In turn, Brian will forward these donations to the Endowment Fund. Checks and credit card charges
should be made payable to The Endowment Fund of Phi Kappa Psi - Bill
Collins Scholarship Fund. Credit card donations may be made on-line through the Endowment
Fund's website at www.phikappapsi.com
. The Endowment Fund will provide a receipt
for federal income tax purposes acknowledging each contribution.
Pledged Gifts: Alumni may make pledged gifts on a monthly, quarterly or yearly basis -
for up to five years. These contributions may be made automatically by credit card
through the Endowment Fund's website, www.phikappapsi.com
. Alumni may also make
pledged gifts by forwarding a pledge plan (click
here for copy) to Brian at the same address
above. The Campaign Committee will forward a letter reminding each participant of the impending due date for each pledged contribution. The
Endowment Fund will provide each alumnus with a tax receipt soon after the end of each
calendar year, which will summarize your gift(s) for the tax year.
Stock Donations: Alumni who wish to directly transfer a securities interest to the
Endowment Fund can do so by directing an electronic transfer into the Endowment
Fund's equity account. You will receive a donation credit for the security based on the
closing price on the date the security is received by the Endowment Fund. This option is
especially beneficial for alumni who have highly appreciated securities and desire to
bypass the resultant capital gains tax from selling the security.
Real Estate: As with securities contributions, alumni may donate real estate to the
Texas Beta Capital Campaign, and receive a credit for the full fair market value of
the real estate. Additionally, such contributions are not subject to capital gains tax for
gain realized. Real estate which is subject to a mortgage receives a credit for the full fair
market value of the real estate, less the amount owed on the mortgage.
Planned Giving: Alumni may also contribute to the
Texas Beta Capital Campaign through planned giving - trusts, annuities, life insurance, retirement plans, or bequests.
Each of these options presents special estate planning issues, which should be addressed
with an alumnus' personal financial advisor or legal counsel. The Campaign Committee
can assist in making such arrangements, as well. The tax benefits of such contributions
inure to the alumnus' estate by reducing the value of the estate and potential estate tax
liability.
1The Texas Beta Bill
Collins' Scholarship Fund is a now-existent sub-account of the Endowment Fund, which is
used for scholarships awarded on an annual basis to deserving undergraduates of
Texas Beta. Currently, the principal balance of the Scholarship Fund is approximately
$39,000, which permits awarding of $1800.00 in scholarships for the
2000-2001 academic year. The balance of the Scholarship Fund will not be
utilized to fund any portion of the Campaign only borrowed against and
then repaid at market rates.
We Need Your
Help!
While we have
the building going up we need to outfit the interior and provide
the "extras". We are hoping that each brother will look
at their situation and lend a hand where they can. Look over the
list and complete the form at the bottom of the page. There are three
ways you can help:
Method #1:
Provide Business Contacts
With a "laundry list" of needed items we are asking that
alumni brothers who might be involved in the sale of such items
let us know so we might save some money by the purchase of items
at a reduced, wholesale cost. For example, if a brother works for
a kitchen equipment company and can provide ovens, refrigerator or
sinks at cost then we will utilize that brother as a vendor for
those items.
Method #2: Make
Targeted Donations
If a brother has a special interest in an area or function within
the new facility they can underwrite the cost or donate the items
for that purpose. We will be offering brothers the opportunity to
have themselves or another recognized for the targeted donation by
their name being engraved and posted on or near the item/area.
Method #3: Make
General Donation: Buy a Brick
We appreciate those brothers who make unrestricted gifts to either
the Texas Beta House Corporation (no tax deduction) or the Bill
Collins Dedicated Endowment Fund account of the national
fraternity (tax deduction). These monies give flexibility to the
House Corporation in providing for the general needs of the
project.

Items that are
available for Sponsorship
The following items/areas are available for sponsorship. Some
items are worthy additions to the house while others are just fun.
We need to protect and display the 50 years of historical items we
have and a trophy or display case would be a suitable gift. On the
other hand why not memorialize that favorite brother who stands
out in your mind with his own urinal or women's toilet?
